Molecular Mechanism of IKK in FFA-associated Insulin Resistance

Principal Investigator:  Jianping Ye

Funding:  NIDDK/NIH (R01)

This project is designed to investigate the molecular mechanism by which free fatty acids induce insulin resistance. The study is focused on protein kinase IKK and its downstream transcription factor NF-kB in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. Regulation of IRS-1 and PPARg functions by IKK/NF-kB will be examined in the context of FFA-induced insulin resistance, and the mechanisms by which IKK is activated by FFAs will be explored.  No overlap.

Botanicals and Metabolic Syndrome

Principal Investigator:  William T Cefalu

Project 2 Leader:  Jianping Ye

Funding:  NCCAM/NIH (P50)

This center grant (containing 3 projects) is designed to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which botanical products regulate glucose and fatty acids metabolism in human and animals. The project 2 is to study a Chinese herbal medicine Shilianhua (SLH). Regulation of energy expenditure, insulin sensitivity, fat oxidation, and insulin secretion by SLH will be studied. Bioactive components in SLH will be analyzed. No overlap.
