Mission


T
he mission of the Physical Activity and Obesity Epidemiology Laboratory is to improve the health of human populations through research, increasing public awareness, and advocacy around issues related to physical activity, physical fitness, and obesity.

Our mission is achieved through:

 

  • Conducting empirical research on the effects of physical activity, fitness, and obesity on morbidity and mortality  
  • Conducting systematic interventions in community and primary care settings to determine the effectiveness of different approaches to reduce obesity and improve health
  • Surveillance of population trends in physical activity, physical fitness, obesity, and other chronic disease risk factors, and quantifying their impact on population health and the health care system
  • Synthesizing, evaluating and disseminating the existing evidence of the health consequences of physical inactivity and obesity in the form of scientific reviews and commissioned documents to inform both clinical practice and policies aimed at improving the health of the population
