CALERIE: Comprehensive Assessment of Long -Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy

Funding provided by NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON AGING/NIH

October 2001-September 2007

The CALERIE study was designed to test the benefits of long-term reduction of calories on health and aging. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center was one of three institutions funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to research the impact of caloric restrictions on life span. Participants between the ages of 25-50 followed reduced calorie diets and increased their physical activity levels in order to test whether calorie restrictions reduced oxidative stress in tissues and improved risk factors for metabolic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
