POUNDS LOST: Preventing Overweight Using

Novel Dietary Strategies

Funding provided by the NATIONAL HEART, LUNG, AND BLOOD INSTITUTE/NIH

2004 - 2007

POUNDS LOST was designed to test the effectiveness of 4 diets varying in carbohydrate, fat, and protein on weight loss and weight maintenance.  The goal of the study was to determine which type of eating pattern results in the most weight loss at 6 months and which is the most effective in maintaining weight loss over a 2-year period.  The trial included 800 overweight men and women ages 30 to 70 years.  This research study may serve to develop healthy eating menus for the public and serve as a model for future weight loss diets.  Participating institutions include the Harvard School of Public Health and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
