Indirect Calorimetry

The AMBC offers three devices to measure metabolism via indirect calorimetry. Indirect calorimetry is an effective method of measuring VO2, VCO2, Energy Expenditure, and RER.  These systems can also provide the user with activity measurements as well as food and water intake.

TSE Systems Phenomaster/Labmaster

  • Measures both mice and rats, independently

  • Measures up to 24 animals simultaneously

  • Animals are housed in standard shoebox cages during measurement
  • Measurement time of 1 1/2 minutes per animal

  • Activity measurements via beam breaks

  • Measures food intake -- pelleted diets only

  • Measures water/liquid intake

  • Food access -- timed feeding, paired feedings, restricted feedings

  • All cages are enclosed in an environmentally controlled chamber (4° to 60°C operating temperature)

  • For the current TSE policies please visit: TSE Policies
  • For rate information please visit: Rates

Sable Systems Promethion (4 independent systems: Promethion1, Promethion2, Promethion3 & Promethion 4)

  • Measures mice only

  • Measures up to 16 mice simultaneously per system (48 total with all systems)

  • Measurement time of 5 minutes per 16 cages

  • Activity measurements via X,Y,Z beam breaks

  • Measures food and water intake

  • Has attachable running wheels
  • All cages are enclosed in an environmentally controlled chamber (4° to 40°C operating temperature)

  • For rate information please visit: Rates

Metabolic Treadmill*

  • Measures one mouse at a time

  • Modular treadmill is air tight and attached to an indirect calorimeter to measure oxygen consumption and energy expenditure during an exercise bout.

  • Electrical stimulus option

  • Adjustable incline

  • For rate information please visit: Rates
